Core Barrels

Boart Longyear introduced the wireline core retrieval system in 1958, being the first diamond drilling exploration product manufacturer to offer this revolutionary system that not only increased productivity on the work site but more importantly, made tripping core from the bottom of the hole safer for the Drilling Assistant.

The introduction of wireline technology has allowed the retrieval of the full inner tube without the need to pull the core rods out of the hole. Again using a double tube core barrel system, the full inner tube of core is capable of being with the use of a component called the head assembly. Situated above the inner tube, the head assembly is capable of being unlatched and retrieved using a device called an overshot and brought to the surface by a wireline cable, drastically decreasing the overall time and physical effort required to collect the core sample.

With increasing drilling productivity in mind, Boart Longyear launched the patented Quick Descent core barrel head in March 2008. Providing the customer with a core barrel configuration that has the potential to increase core barrel descent speed up to 30 percent, this product innovation secures Boart Longyear’s position as the most innovative supplier of wireline coring technology.
