Tunneling rods are used in single pass drilling and are most commonly available in hexagon, male-to-male configuration. Typically the drive thread is larger than the bit thread, this larger size is possible because it is used in a single pass application so there is no restriction on the coupling diameter because the coupling does not enter the drill hole. All tunneling rods are carburised because they are used underground where corrosion resistance is important.
