Oriented core is increasingly playing an important role in deposit definition and structural analysis. It allows the exploration teams to make more informed decisions and thus reducing costs and time in wasted drilling.

It is the best way to determine the true direction of the mineralization of a geological feature, deposit and/or the associated structure. This critical information reduces the risk of misinterpreting the orientation of a deposit and therefore allowing the company more information for design and stress interpretation. Genuine raw data without error permits oriented drill data to be captured in a database and used in the build-up of geologic models and resource estimations. Where the exploration activities are in environments of high structural intensity such as bedding, foliation, and faulting or jointing; oriented core datasets can be plotted on stereonets to indicate structural orientation. Often strong datasets will prove to have multiple directions of structure. Historical limitations in oriented core systems have prompted many data points to be dismissed. However, with new innovation in oriented core technology, oriented core now compliments geological interpretations in a more robust validated process.

Electronic Backend Tools

Boart Longyear’s new generation of oriented core technology, TruCore delivers genuinely good orientation marks. With proper training, documentation, and communication between the geologists and drillers – electronic oriented core tools accurately define the orientation of drilled structures. The TruCore tool fits on the back-end of the core barrel and the orientation marks are on the last piece of core in the tube. The orientation mark is made when the run is brought to the drill and is rotated using the electronic device. The device signals to the drillers as the core is being rotated where the bottom mark should be made. The geologist builds the core together piece by piece using the bottom of the core markers and aligning the core along a continuous line.

Extended full-length outer tubes are also available which eliminate the need for extensions altogether, increasing the strength and reliability of the drill string.

TruCore™ can accurately orient core over a wide range of dip angles. Every tool is checked with precision measuring equipment prior to each rental, ensuring the correct results mining clients count.


Onsite training and Verification of Competency can be administered by a qualified Boart Longyear service technician for each new drill site or crew. The training sessions can include a combination of classroom lessons, a practical assessment, a training session attendance sheet and competency sign-off. The training results and documentation can be provided to management upon completion for internal tracking to ensure adequate levels of training are maintained at acceptable intervals.
