ESG Social Practice

Our social practice encompasses safety, diversity and inclusion, and stakeholder engagement.

At Boart Longyear, safety is a core company value, and we expect all employees to work together to “make it safe, make it personal and make it home”. Our industry-leading safety standards, programs, and processes are designed to protect the health and safety of employees, contractors and visitors at all sites and facilities, as well as the communities in which we operate.

We believe in the power of inclusion and diversity for safer, more efficient and innovation-stimulating workplaces and teams. In 2021, our diversity objectives were embedded into the overall goals of all Executive Committee and senior leadership team members, leading to the establishment of a Diversity Committee to further develop our diversity vision and set company-wide objectives.

Engaging with and listening to our stakeholders has long been a cornerstone of Boart Longyear’s operations. We are committed to consulting with host governments and local communities to deliver timely operational information and provide opportunity for collaboration and dialogue with our varied stakeholder groups.

Safety

Boart Longyear commits to protecting the health and safety of our employees, contractors, and visitors at all of our sites and facilities. We also commit to protect the environment and the communities in which we operate. Our goal is to deliver continual improvement in the pursuit of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) performance excellence.

Our safety standards, programs, and processes enable drillers to safely maximize productivity. We employ the most progressive and effective safety programs, with field-designed safety innovations, and cultivate an interdependent safety culture where every employee knows safety is a core value.

We are proud of our safety innovations and certifications and strive to exceed the expectations of our clients when it comes to safe operations. Please select a category below to learn more about our safety programs.

Diversity and Inclusion

Our success is driven by the skills and dedication of our people. As we grow, we want to expand our reach to include an even more diverse employee base. Our future will be transformative offering a workplace where tasks will be easier, safer and appeal to more people. By modifying our workplace, and the equipment and tools we use, we will create a more attractive environment to a broader population. Our vision is to create a unified workforce which welcomes and celebrates the unique attributes of individual employees across all diversity categories, including but not limited to:

  • Age

  • Disability

  • Gender and gender fluidity

  • Race

  • Religion and

  • Sexual orientation.

Diversity Goals

While we strive to increase our overall workforce diversity, one of our key priorities is real progress toward gender equality. In 2021, we increased the number of women employed as Drillers and Drillers’ Assistants across our global operations by 125%.

In 2019, the World Bank estimated women represented 8% to 17% of the global mining workforce*. We aim to increase total female representation from 9.79% in 2021 to 15% by 2025 by committing to the following:

  • review work areas to identify barriers to inclusion and implement measures to overcome.

  • recruit, develop and retain talented employees with diverse backgrounds and experience in terms of operating function and department, with an emphasis on historically male-occupied roles.

  • develop leadership awareness of diversity and inclusion to improve organizational capacity and capabilities and capture evidence of female leadership in areas of our business where roles have historically been held by men.

Innovating for Greater Diversity

Progress in automating surface and underground drilling presents an enormous opportunity to advance our diversity and inclusion goals. An example of technological development enables drillers to operate equipment from remote locations significantly increasing the pool of diverse talent from which we can draw.

Workforce Training and Development

One of many benefits a career with Boart Longyear offers is access to ongoing, industry-leading training and development programs. Training is critical to ensure the health and safety of our employees and deliver consistent customer experience across our global platform.

Prior to commencing work, every employee completes mandatory new hire orientation as well as mandatory online study of our policies and procedures from Code of Business Conduct to Critical Risk Management via BITS (Boart Longyear Integrated Training System) eLearning or via classroom instruction.

At employment commencement, new hires are expected to learn and understand our company EHS standards by successfully passing an online or in-person quiz.

Within 12 months of hire, new field-based employees will:

  • read learner guides to understand why procedures are performed in specific ways and to provide understanding of the drilling process.

  • understand and be assessed on standard work procedures (SWP) which are key to performing specific jobs correctly. *

* Some SWPs are targeted for completion within 90 days of hire.

Our Valued Stakeholders

Engaging with and listening to stakeholders has long been a cornerstone of Boart Longyear’s operations. We are committed to consulting with host governments and local communities, delivering timely information regarding our operations while providing opportunity for collaboration and dialogue with our various stakeholder groups.

By employing a transparent and efficient process, we strive to address stakeholder concerns early, while demonstrating our commitment to operational integrity. We begin by focusing on safety and protecting the environment and communities in which we operate, utilizing the most progressive and effective safety programs and innovations available.

We believe the most effective stakeholder and community engagement is delivered and managed at regional and local level to appreciate and understand the unique cultural and socio-economic considerations of every operation.
