Reverse Circulation Drilling

Reverse circulation (RC) drilling uses a dual-walled drill rod with a cutting tool, typically a pneumatic reciprocating hammer, to produce a bore hole in a rock formation and to retrieve rock chips and cuttings from the bottom of the hole. Reverse circulation is achieved by blowing air down the rods in the annulus between the inner and outer tube, causing differential pressure that creates lift for cuttings that travel up the inner tube to the surface. RC drilling has proven itself as a fast and economical means to collect mineral samples and has grown in popularity since its introduction in Australia in the 1980s.

Swivels

Used in either pure RC drilling or conventional Down The Hole (DTH) methods, Boart Longyear swivels are a cost effective alternative to conventional top and bottom swivel operation; and with only one set of connections, they provide additional safety benefits and lower maintenance requirements.

RC Drill String

The RC drill string is designed to deliver high pressure and high volume air to the cutting tool at the bottom of the bore hole. Once a drill rig is selected, subs and adaptors make it possible to connect a drill string to the drill head, in many different combinations depending on the choice of tools used.

Boart Longyear offers drill rods with Faber, Matrix, Metzke, and Remet type threads for complete compatibility with all systems. Our robust drill pipe provides 360° of contact from inner tube collar to outer tube and is designed to be easily replaced in the field, minimizing costly downtime.

Faber
Faber-type thread is one of the recognized standard threads used in reverse circulation drilling. Boart Longyear Faber-type drill pipe features high-grade alloy tool joints with heat treated pins for superior resistance to damage, high strength precision mid-bodies for long life and ease of assembly, and field replaceable inner tube assemblies. Faber type thread uses a four threads per inch design.

Matrix
Matrix-type thread is another recognized standard in RC drilling. Boart Longyear Matrix-type drill pipe features high-grade alloy tool joints with heat treated pins for superior resistance to damage, high strength precision mid-bodies for long life and ease of assembly. In Matrix type rod, the inner tube can be fixed with rubber stabilizers or field replaceable with steel stabilizers.  Matrix-type RC pipe features sealing o-rings on the pin portion of the inner tube assembly, providing optimal inner tube sealing and airflow. Matrix-type thread uses a coarser, more durable three threads per inch design.

Metzke
Metzke-type thread is one of the recognized standard threads used in reverse circulation drilling. Boart Longyear Metzke-type drill pipe features high-grade alloy tool joints with heat treated pins for superior resistance to damage, high strength precision midbodies, for long life and ease of assembly, and field replaceable inner tube assemblies with special joints that offer 360-degree stabilization with minimal flow restriction. Metzke-type thread uses a four threads per inch design and more robust 90° tool joint mating surface.

Remet
Remet-type thread is another recognized standard in RC drilling. Boart Longyear Remet-type drill pipe features high-grade alloy tool joints with heat treated pins for superior resistance to damage, high strength precision midbodies, for long life and ease of assembly, and field replaceable inner tube assemblies with special joints offer 360-degree stabilization with minimal flow restriction. Remet-type RC pipe features sealing o-rings on the pin portion of the inner tube assembly, providing optimal inner tube sealing and airflow.  Remet-type thread uses a coarser, more durable three threads per inch design.
